This is an article from the NYT that explains The avatar universe will be filled out and told through various mediums and technology for at least the next 20 years, it goes on to say that the three movies will follow the stories of the main characters Jake and Neytiri.

Man this excites me so much, Im glad these characters will keep living on into the foreseeable future, even when the last movie is released and finished. Look at Star Wars it lived on strong through other media such as comics and novels, action figures, video games, even though they went a very long time without any new movies. I'm excited that Avatar will continue on and the story wont die any time soon!
